When CBS bought Fender in the 60s, they started changing a few designs, including the popular Blackface Fender Deluxe Reverb. Adding a silver faceplate and new grill cloth, the new versions stood apart—but the tone stayed close to the same. For this version of the '68 Custom Deluxe Reverb, Fender has offered more variety, with a new 2-channel approach.
- The “Vintage” channel is the recognizable Fender Deluxe sound: bright, full and clean.
- The “Custom” channel employs a modified Bassman tone stack for greater flexibility, especially with pedals. It also overdrives at slightly lower volumes and offers greater touch sensitivity.
- A single 12” Celestion G12V-70 offers a little more growl.
With all the modifications, both channels offer classic American tone, originating from two 6V6 power tubes, and simple treble and bass controls. Tube-driven reverb moves easily from shimmer to surf, and Fender’s vibrato is the industry standard. Both can be accessed with the included footswitch and both work on either channel.
Deluxe Reverb amps are long-time studio favorites because of their great tone, convenient size and reliability. Highly regarded as a yardstick for great tone, tons of hits have been cut with Deluxe Reverbs. They make great club amps, too, since they’re compact enough to transport easily and offer enough volume for a variety of styles. You can’t go wrong with a Deluxe.
Why We Like It
Fender has been a leader in amp design since the 50s, but this new '68 Custom Deluxe Reverb is really good. Two channels, distinctly different tones (both very usable) and a Celestion G12V-70 make this the best Deluxe Reverb ever—highly recommended!
