If you’ve ever heard a Chet Atkins recording featuring his DelVechio guitar, you know how amazingly warm yet cutting a wood-bodied resonator guitar can sound (imagine an acoustic version of a Strat in the 2nd pickup position). This little guitar captures that tone.

The Boxcar is beautifully understated: The front, back and sides are made of laminated, figured mahogany in a semi-gloss finish. The body and rosewood fingerboard are unbound, as are the f-holes. Fingerboard inlays are simple dots. The vintage-style headstock gets a little more attention, with turn-of-the-century Paris-style lettering over pearloid facing—less subtle, but fun and true to the original Gretsch guitars of the 1930s era.

The neck is single-piece mahogany with an easy-playing soft “V” shape. Tuners are Grover Sta-Tites. The resonator is the new Gretsch “Ampli-Sonic” diaphragm made from hand-spun aluminum, with a '30s-style ‘poinsettia-pattern’ cover plate. The Boxcar is lightweight, too, at around 5 1/2 lbs. An optional gig bag is available.

Looks-wise, the Boxcar isn’t a showstopper. But tone-wise, this may be one of the sweetest guitars we carry—especially at this price.

Why We Like Gretsch Resonator Guitars

Creative guitarists—especially studio-denizen tone junkies—are always after a broad array of sounds. And nothing stands out in a mix like a resonator-style guitar, whether played traditionally (roundneck) or with a slide (squareneck). Since vintage instruments can get a little pricey, we’re happy to offer a selection of low-to-mid-priced reso guitars that offer traditional tone and performance without the big investment.

These guitars from the Gretsch Roots Collection do exactly that. Available in both wood and metal bodies, roundneck and squareneck, Gretsch guitars get the authentic sound without the authentic price, and look great doing it.
