Vox AC15C1 15W Amplifier w/ 1x 12" Celestion Greenback
If you’re a ‘multiple gain stages/Marshall-esque distortion’ player, this probably isn’t your amp. But if you love the full voicing, classic chime and subtle grind of those timeless British amp tones, nothing makes it happen like a Vox AC15 Custom.
First off, these are 15 very loud watts—all-tube, with EL-84s at the core through a 12” Celestion Greenback—but they’re also very controllable, able to deliver warm clean tones or beautiful gritty presence. Even though its bigger brother, the AC30, is a deserving standard for many players, we wouldn’t hesitate to use an AC15 for most club gigs, or run a pair for larger stages.
The AC15 features a Normal channel, the world-famous Vox Top Boost channel, a master volume, tremolo, and reverb. You can also add an extension speaker. Either way, this is one fine-sounding little amp.
Why We Like It
It would be easy to get caught up in nostalgia and simply associate Vox with the ‘60s British Invasion. But Vox amps really sound distinctive and great—different from Fender and very different from contemporary midrange-focused, heavy-distortion amps. And since Korg has been involved in their manufacture, they’ve also become more reliable and affordable than ever.
The AC15 is quite versatile, and an excellent choice for just about any kind of music. It likes pedals; it can crank on its own; and the Vox tremolo is one of our faves. Nothing sounds better with a Tele or a Gretsch, and it’s pretty easy to haul. We’re very comfortable recommending Vox amps, especially the AC15.
