The original Vox AC30 was introduced in the 1960s to handle Britain’s emerging rock stars' demands for something more powerful than their AC15 combos. Today, the AC30C2 is still one of the world’s most popular amps, coveted for its unique, articulate ‘Top Boost’ sound and responsible for countless hits over the past 50 years.   

The Vox AC30C2 tone relies on 4 x EL84 tubes to deliver 30W big of power through a pair of 12" Celestion G12M Greenback speakers. It’s an unbeatable combination, able to deliver the perfect amount of edge while keeping chords clear and distinct.

The amp offers two channels: Normal and Top-Boost. Each channel is equipped with its own Volume control, and the Top Boost channel offers highly interactive Treble and Bass tone controls. Both channels route through the Tone Cut and Volume controls in the Master section, for additional tone shaping. The Master Volume works with the individual channel volumes to create anything from a classic Vox "chimey" sound to a powerful overdrive.

A switchable 8/16 ohm output jack lets you power an external speaker cabinet when you need a different or bigger sound (using this jack will mute the internal speakers). Or, when you simply want to run an extra 16-ohm cabinet along with the internal speakers for a fuller sound (or spread the stage), the amp offers a 2nd extension speaker jack. 

The AC30C2 includes classic Vox tremolo, built-in spring reverb with its own tone control, and for greater effects control, a true-bypass effects loop.

Why We Like It

It would be easy to get caught up in nostalgia and simply associate Vox with the ‘60s British Invasion. But Vox amps really sound distinctive and great—different from Fender and very different from contemporary midrange-focused, heavy-distortion amps. And since Korg has been involved in their manufacture, they’ve also become more reliable and affordable than ever.

AC30s are, simply, wonderful-sounding amps. We think of them as “articulate.” Not as piercing as some California-made amps, they have a warmer clean tone. But cranked, they still let you hear every note. And with tons of headroom, they handle pedals very well. And nothing looks any classier.
