It's a simple story. Analog synthesizer, still young and green, meets world. They fall in love. Glorious music happens. Then times and styles change, and they drift apart. The synth falls into a dark spiral (world's not so hot either, but that's a different story). Then 30-odd years later, the analog synth and the world run into each other again, and their love is rekindled, perhaps stronger than ever ...
OK, maybe that's a little much. But it's safe to say that Korg’s MS-20 monophonic synthesizer, first introduced in 1978, is still a coveted instrument, thanks to its thick, robust sound, its powerful, iconic analog filter, and its versatile patching options. So the smart folks at Korg are bringing it back. (Cue romantic music ...very funky romantic music).
Now all those beautiful, punchy analog sounds of the MS-20 are here again in the MS-20 Mini. The same engineers who developed the original MS-20 have perfectly reproduced its circuitry and fit it into a compact new footprint that still retains the distinctive look of the original.
Korg is certain the MS-20 mini will dazzle you with its absolutely authentic analog synth sound. They even had the original developers comment for their promo copy:
"Fifty years have passed since Korg was founded, and we have once again put our hand to an analog synthesizer. We took particular care to deliver smooth parameter adjustments, which are a distinctive feature of analog synthesizers. We also took special care to completely reproduce the original specifications of the MS-20. The analog circuits we designed 35 years ago still deliver the same unbeatable, powerful sound, from the ultra-low to the ultra-high range."
Yes, that's like having your mom write your resume, but we think you'll agree: The MS-20 Mini is one be-yotchin' little synth!
Why we like it
It's the real deal, plain and simple. The MS-20 mini is a true analog synth, created by the original guys, from the original Korg MS20 schematic (a 70s-era dinosaur that had killer analog tones). If you're looking for the classic MS-20 sounds, it's pretty safe to say you won't get closer than this. Sometimes the old stuff is still the best.
