It's neat how such a great company came from the inspiration of a young guy trying to play a cheap guitar, but in the case of Jean Larrivee, high action and bad tone provided all the motivation he needed to start a journey that ultimately transpired into one of the leading manufacturers of acoustic instruments today.
Shifting from Duane Eddy to studying classical guitar, Jean became interested in guitar building, and just a few years later, was under the tutelage of renowned classical guitar builder, Edgar Monch.
Knowing what he wanted to do, Larrivee began his vision of making the best acoustic guitars he knew how. Taking his experience of classical building, he applied many of his acquired nylon string construction techniques with traditional steel string building concepts and Larrivee Guitars were born.
After twenty-five years and over twenty thousand steel string guitars later, it's safe to say Larrivee has proven conclusively that this designs have great structural integrity and amazing tone. During that time, Jean Larrivee has developed outstanding new acoustic guitar designs, lasting friendships with other guitar makers and legions of happy customers. I became one of the many when I walking into Corner Music looking for an OM to go with my Jumbo (it wasn't a Larrivee). Within two weeks, I had found a wonderful Larrivee OM, and had sold my Jumbo, so I could get my brand new Larrivee Jumbo.
We carry many fine lines of acoustic guitars, but no other line has sold as well as the Larrivees, and of the people working here, who play the guitar, at least one Larrivee acoustic guitar is in their collection
